Has your small business been using Microsoft Excel to manage your data? Excel is included for companies already paying for Microsoft Office, so there's no extra cost involved, and most people have used it before for at least the most basic tasks. Then when you have new data in your Excel template, you can automatically upload it to refresh all your reports and dashboards.

What about other options?

PowerBI pricing has increased significantly, with Pro users now paying $14 per month (up 40% from $10) and Premium Per User at $24 per month. Beyond the subscription costs, Power BI comes with considerable complexity in both architecture and setup, as well as the level of technical expertise needed to build dashboards and reports (do you know DAX?). The Pro version is limited to 1GB datasets, and row-level security requires upgrading to Premium or Fabric. Power BI is a great option for larger teams with Microsoft-trained, dedicated IT staff, but it's a challenge for most casual Excel users. Tableau is powerful software, but comes with enterprise-level pricing. Tableau Public is free, but all your business data is public – you don't want that. Standard pricing requires annual commitments with Creator licenses at $75/month, Explorer at $42/month, and Viewer at $15/month. For a team of 25 Explorer users, you're looking at over $12,600 per year. Row-level security requires upgrading to Enterprise tier plus additional Data Management add-ons. Domo no longer publishes pricing and requires sales calls for quotes. Industry estimates suggest annual contracts starting at $30,000-$100,000+, with their consumption-based credit model making costs unpredictable. What was once offered as a free Excel import feature is now part of their enterprise-only pricing structure with opaque, usage-based billing that can quickly escalate.
Sticking with Excel is an option – change is tough.
